Cassidy Blake has once again traveled to a foreign city with her parents – the Inspecters. While her mom and dad are off to hunt paranormal tales for their TV show, Cassidy hunts whatever seems to be following her in the shadows. Someone, or something, is causing trouble – not only for Cass but also the beautiful city of light, Paris.
This lovely sequel to City of Ghosts is just around 300 pages but it’s a big adventure in a small box. It’s obviously a pretty quick read as it’s also technically a middle grade book but it’s a wonderful ride nonetheless.
The characters are simply wonderful. Cassidy herself is a delight and it’s great to see that she’s not a perfect hero but a girl who embraces her fears and powers through them. It’s also a nice change of scenery that her parents are very much involved in her life and worries when she goes missing. Unfortunately, parents just aren’t that popular in MG/YA so I appreciated their presence throughout the story. Jacob, Cassidy’s best (ghost) friend has a big development in this sequel and I like to see more of him and his background.
Besides the main characters, Lara, who Cassidy met in book one, pops in here and there with input and she’s quite frankly a hilarious snob. As for the ghosts.. there’s a lot. Cassidy is evolving and becoming more sure of herself as a ghost hunter and it really makes me excited to see what’s in store for us (and her) in the future.
The writing is typical Victoria Schwab in the best way! It is so very simple and yet so very beautiful. She captures the essence of both characters, places and atmospheres like no one else. T’here’s not much more to be said really. If you love Victoria’s writing, you’ll love reading Tunnel of Bones.
The settings are gorgeous! Paris is my soul city and I love this place more than anywhere else in the world! Obviously this means I can’t be particularly objective but the city atmosphere really does spill out of the pages. You’ll feel as if you’re walking along the Seine eating a chocolate-filled croissant yourself. Pure heaven…
My only no-no: the only thing I’m a little annoyed by is the pace/length of the story. It’s fast paced, which is great, but sometimes the scenes are bit too rushed. I understand that this is a middle grade book but I would have liked some more time to savour the locations, dialogues and action packed scenes. That’s the only “negative” point I can find.
As you can tell from my rating, this was sooo close to perfection. I’ve been waiting a long time for Cassidy Blake’s next adventure and I was not disappointed. Yes, I did have a few tiny issues but nothing that distracted me from how cozy (and chilling) the story was. It was a fun read and I loved every page. I highly recommend this book!
[You obviously need to pick up book one, City of Ghosts, first if you haven’t read it yet.]
