Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

June 12, 2018

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days. The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. Her parents are nothing but relieved but no one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares – and neither does she. Until a boy is thrown into her cell, shattering her tiny, meaningless existence. She knows him. She used to watch him. And as they become closer, both of them are catapulted into a fight for survival and freedom, far away from the evil Reestablishment.

I don’t even know where to start with this book. I underestimated it so much and I’m truly sorry to the author and other fans. I honestly thought it would be an interesting read but also kind of a typical YA read. How wrong was I?!

Tahereh Mafi is an extraordinary writer and she somehow manages to keep the perfect balance of descriptive world building and fast-paced action. Her words flow so elegantly and effortlessly, I was blown away. I could almost watch this entire book as a movie in my mind, when I read it, because the descriptions are so clear and at the same time it’s an easy read with plenty of action. This was my first Mafi book but if the next one is just as good, she’s going straight to my favorite authors-list.

I found the characters really interesting as well. Juliette is truly a broken soul and since the world considers her a freak, she sees herself the same way too – like she’s not worthy of love or compassion. I was doubting whether I dared trust any of the characters throughout the story and I loved the suspense! There was a constant element of trust hanging in the atmosphere and I braced myself many times, expecting some sort of betrayal to come on the next page.

The nearest I can come to ANYTHING negative about this book is that I’m not quite sure how I feel about the crossed-out sentences. That’s it, that’s seriously it. Such a good read. If you haven’t picked it up yet I highly recommend that you do as soon as possible!
