In this holiday collection we get 12 short stories fit for the season by 12 popular authors such as Holly Black, Rainbow Rowell and Kiersten White. Prepare for your heart to melt the winter snow away with these romantic stories of love and friendship.
Although I don’t usually enjoy short stories, they seem fit for the season where, sometimes, you just want to read something cozy and simple to avoid the cold and darkness outside. That’s exactly what you get with this holiday collection. These stories are great for a busy Christmas time since they’re short enough to be read while you’re waiting for the cookies to cool or taking a break from wrapping presents. It’s the perfect mental getaway when you need a small break here and there and you won’t have time to get bored before you’re on to the next title.
As for the quality of the stories, well, it’s hard to pinpoint since the authors are so very different in writing style and character building. In general though, I would recommend not going into this collection expecting too much from it. It’s great entertainment filled with a warm holiday spirit, but it’s not the deepest or the most character developing stories. Most are centred around a cute/fluffy romance with a sense of magic in the air but my personal favorites include Polaris Is Where You’ll Find Me by Jenny Han where a little girl gets adopted by Santa and has to live among elves (so cute!) and Midnights by Rainbow Rowell where we witness the same people celebrating New Years Eve for 4 years and how they change.
As it often is with short stories, we don’t really get a lot of background knowledge or have time (or pages) enough to connect to the different worlds or characters on a deeper level. It leaves a kind of shallow feeling behind if you’re used to longer, more substantial books. This isn’t a collection you’ll remember for a long time after reading it, but there is a decent entertainment value to be found within the stories and it gets you in the perfect mindset before Christmas.
If you’re looking for a winter read with a lot of character development or intricate world building this is not the book for you right now. However, if you’re looking for a cozy holiday story, you should find a copy of My True Love Gave To Me right away, as you get not one but 12 that will warm you on a cold day and drag out your holiday spirit.
